Coaching as an emotional support for those living with and beyond cancer: Experience from coaches and clients. The presentation will detail the overall approach taken for the research and outline the methods used to capture the data across three studies, focusing on two of these studies.  This session will also provide a valuable insight into the work at the Fountain Centre.

Hosted by Andrew Parsons PhD, this virtual group is open to all EMCC UK members and non-members who have an interest in, or work in the Health & Wellbeing Coaching & Mentoring Sector. The intent is to meet bi-monthly with guest speakers, networking opportunities, latest thoughts on coaching and mentoring techniques, accreditation, CPD and aims to build a specific community with shared experiences.

Join us for a 6pm start. The session will run for 60 minutes.

Special guest Andrew Marren

Hello, I'm Andrew Marren. I'm currently working full-time on a PhD collaboration between the University of Portsmouth and The Fountain Centre (a cancer charity). Over the last two years, the project has investigated the coaching service provided by the Fountain Centre to develop insights into cancer care coaching.
Before the PhD, I worked as a coaching research intern at the University of South Wales (USW). I supported the coaching programmes internally and externally. During this time, I took up the ILM Level 7 training modules to develop my understanding and application of coaching.
Before working at USW, I completed a BSc in Psychology at USW. I then went on to an MSc in Work Psychology at Loughborough University. During my academic journey, I completed a dissertation investigating the impact of a coaching training programme on manager leadership styles within foodservice. My work and educational experiences have heavily involved researching coaching, developing a desire to understand how coaching can support individuals and the roles and approaches used by coaches.

The presentation will detail the overall approach taken for the research and outline the methods used to capture the data across three studies. The presentation will focus on two studies:

  • Study one explored coaches' experiences when coaching individuals who are living with and beyond cancer. The insights from study one illustrate coaches' approaches, behaviours, and considerations when working with clients who are in an uncertain and anxious time of their lives.
  • Study two explored the client's experiences of coaching at the Fountain Centre. The insights from study two showed the impact of the coaching on clients' internal shift through being empowered, supporting self-discovery, and achieving calm and clarity in their lives.

Hopefully, the session will provide an exciting and valuable insight into the work at the Fountain Centre, and I look forward to speaking with the group.
